Adverb-Study Notes-1

 

Definition of adverbs:

add + verb = adverb

The word that tells us something more about the verb (action done) is known as the adverb.

Adjective + ly = adverb

Example:

  1. Bright + ly = brightly – The sun is shining brightly.

(verb = is shining. Shining how? Ans = brightly. Thus brightly = Adverb)

 

  1. Happy + ly = happily – The girl skipped along happily.

(verb = skipped. Skipped how? Ans: happily. Thus happily = Adverb)

 

Formation of adverbs:

Adjective + ly = adverb (of manner)

Question asked – How? to the verb in the sentence.

Examples:

  1. The crow flew swiftly. (swift + ly = swiftly)

(verb = flew; Question – flew how? Ans: swiftly. Thus, swiftly = adverb)

 

  1. Mother cooks quickly. (quick +ly = quickly)

(verb = cooks; Question – cooks how? Ans: quickly. Thus, quickly = adverb)

 

  1. Mother smiled happily at the twins.(happɏ + i + ly = happily)

(verb = smiled; Question – smiled how? Ans: happily.Thus, happily = adverb)
