FOOD GROUPS


Proteins:

•      Proteins are the building blocks of our body.

•      They are essential for growth.

•      Our body needs proteins for muscle-building and for repairing worn-out tissues.

•      We get proteins from plants as well as animals.

 

Examples:

Pulses:

  1. Pulses are leguminous crops.
  2. India is the world’s largest producer of pulses.

 

Fish:

  1. It is an important source of protein for humans.
  2. Fish oil is also obtained by consuming fish.
  3. Fish oil is usually obtained from salmon, cod liver, whale blubber.

 

Eggs:

  1. Eggs are laid by females of birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
  2. Bird’s eggs are high in protein content and mostly used in cooking.
  3. They are often used in desserts too.

 

Soyabean:

  1. The seeds of this plant are used for making oil.
  2. Among the legumes, soyabean is considered the most important legume because of its high protein content.

 

Chicken:

  1. It is the most common type of poultry in the world.
  2. It contains high amount of protein.

 

Meat:

  1. It is animal flesh that is eaten as food.
  2. The flesh of both mammals and birds are termed as ‘meat’.
  3. It contains high amount of protein as well as fat.

 

Yogurt:

  1. It is a dairy product.
  2. Milk of domestic animals is commonly used to make yogurt.
  3. It is very rich in protein, calcium, vitamins and also fats.
