•      The world's largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, where famous coffee is grown in the rich volcanic soils.

•      Mauna Loa is 13,677 feet above sea level.

Dormant Volcanoes:

•      Dormant volcanoes are those that have not erupted in a long time but may erupt in the future.

•      Some of the well known examples of dormant volcanoes are:

  1. Mt. Baker (Washington; USA)
  2. Mt. Hood (Oregon; USA)
  3. Nisyros (Greece)

 

Extinct Volcanoes:

•      Extinct volcanoes are those that have stopped erupting.

•      Some islands have been formed by the eruption of undersea volcanoes.

•      As recently in 1995, extinct volcano was formed in the Kingdom of Tonga.

•      Some of the well known examples of extinct volcanoes are:

  1. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)
  2. Mt. Warning (Australia)
  3. Elbrus (Russia)

 

Effects of Volcanoes:

  1. Volcanoes have a very serious effect on the land and people around them.
  2. Clouds of ash cover plants making them inedible.
  3. Poisonous gases kill people and animals.
  4. Dust causes pneumonia and illness to the survivors.
  5. Dark skies, severe winds and heavy rains may follow an eruption for months afterwards.
