Conjunction-Study Notes-2

More conjunctions:

BUT: Used to join two ideas that are not same.

Example:

  1. This flower is purple.

  1. That flower is white.

This flower is purple BUT that one is white.

(purple ≠ white. Thus two different ideas. So – BUT is used)

  1. The watermelon is green outside.

  2. It is red inside.

The watermelon is green outside BUT red inside.

(green ≠ red. Two different colours. Hence BUT is used)

  1. The glass is full.

  1. The cup is empty.

The glass is full BUT the cup is empty.

(full ≠ empty. Two opposite words. Hence BUT is used)

The conjunction ‘or’

Uses: To talk about a choice – an option.

Example:

  1. You can choose fries.

  1. You can choose a burger.

You can choose fries OR a burger. (You can have one – fries / burger. Thus ‘OR’ is used)

  1. They may come by train.

  1. They may come by plane.

They may come by train OR by plane. (Only one mode of transport will be used – train / plane. Thus ‘OR’ is used)

Uses: To mean otherwise.

  1. He should hurry up.

  1. He will miss the train.

He should hurry up OR he will miss the train. (OR = otherwise in the above single sentence – If he does not hurry up, he will miss the train)

  1. It will die.

Put the goldfish in the pot OR it will die.
