Formation of adverbs:

Rule 1 :

Add ‘ly’

Great + ly = greatly

Beautiful + ly = beautifully

 

Rule 2:

Adjective ending in ‘le’- drop the ‘e’ and then add ‘y’

Simple –e + y = Simply

Double – e + y = doubly

 

Rule 3:

Adjective ending in ‘ll’ (double ‘l’) – simply add ‘y’

Dull + y = Dully

Full + y = Fully

 

Rule 4:

Adjective ending in ‘y’, change the ‘y’ to ‘i’ and then add ‘ly.’

Happy – y + i + ly = happily

Lucky – y + i + ly = luckily

 

 

Compound adverbs – their meanings and uses:

Adverbs that go together and are joined by conjunctions:

Examples:

  1. Again and again = more than once, repeatedly

Use: One should read good books again and again.

 

  1. By and by = before long, after some time

Use: The boy recovered by and by.

 

  1. Far and near = in all directions

Use: The bright light has spread far and near.

 

  1. Far and away = decidedly, beyond all comparison

Use: This is far and away our best Christmas.

 

  1. Now and then = sometimes, occasionally

Use: Everyone should go camping now and then.

 

More compound adverbs:

  1. Off and on = not regularly, intermittently

Use: My uncle has to go to USA off and on.

 

  1. Over and above = besides, in addition to

Use: We had a burger each over and above our lunch.

 

  1. Out and out= beyond doubt, beyond comparison

Use: Cricket is out and out the most popular sport.

 

  1. Through and through = completely

Use: Our teacher has read Shakespeare through and through.

 

  1. To and fro = backwards and forwards, up and down

Use: The parrot swung to and fro in its cage.
