Past continuous tense:

  1. Form of the verb in past continuous tense: was/were + verb (ing)

Uses:

To express an action that was ongoing at some point of time in the past:

Examples:

  1. The chorus was singing out of tune.

 

  1. Last night the dogs were barking continuously.

 

 

  1. Form of the verb in past continuous tense: was/were + verb (ing)

Uses:

To express an action that was ongoing while another was finished:

Examples:

  1. I was studying when my uncle arrived.

(was studying - past continuous tense / arrived - simple past tense)

   

 

  1. The boy ate his lunch while he was reading a story.

(ate - simple past tense / was reading - past continuous tense)

 

  1. Form of the verb in past continuous tense: was/were + verb (ing)

Uses:

To describe situations or while telling stories:

Examples:

  1. The people were shouting and beating the chain snatchers.

 

  1. Once while a king was visiting a priest, he saw a beautiful deer.

 

Past perfect tense:

The past perfect tense shows the action which finished first:

Examples:

  1. Sheila had written the essay when her cousins came.

 

 

  1. The guests arrived after mother had cooked dinner.
