  • Food is an essential substance consumed by living organisms to obtain the essential nutrients required for the growth and maintenance of life. Such nutrients are digested and assimilated in body to provide energy and to carry out the important life sustaining functions.
  • The nutrients contained in food are of two types: micronutrients and macronutrients.

Sources of Food:

  • Food is obtained from plant and animal.

Agriculture:

  • It is defined as the branch of science that deals with the practice of cultivating soil, producing crops, raising livestock and marketing of the resulting products.

Animal Husbandry:

  • It is defined as the branch of agriculture that deals with the caring, feeding, raising and breeding of domestic animals for human welfare.

  • Human beings are dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry for their food. As the population is increasing the requirement for food is also increasing. Hence there is a need for increasing the production of food from these sources.
