Role of atmosphere in climate control

ROLE OF ATMOSPHERE IN CLIMATE CONTROL

  • Atmosphere plays a crucial role in the regulation of earth’s climate.
  • Air contains different gases and serves as a bad conductor of heat. It holds the surface heat on the earth and prevents it from radiating out in the space. Gases present in the atmosphere trap the outgoing radiations in the lower atmosphere and thus maintain the average temperature of the Earth during the day and even during the course of the whole year.
  • It prevents the sudden increase in temperature during the daylight hours and during the night; it slows down the escape of heat into outer space.
  • These gases are known as greenhouse gases and the process of trapping outgoing radiations is known as greenhouse effect.
  • In the present era man-made emissions of greenhouse gases has increased the phenomena of greenhouse effect and caused global warming.
  • On the surface of the moon, with no atmosphere, the temperature ranges from – 190o C to 110o C.
  • Atmosphere also protects us and all living things from the UV rays of the sun.
