Beware:

Word + object = preposition

Word with no object = adverb

Examples:

1. The runway was cleared. The plane descended soon after.

(after – no object; thus after = adverb)

2. The plane descended soon AFTER the runway was cleared.

(runway – object of AFTER; thus after = preposition)

3. Have they come IN?

(IN – no object; thus in = adverb)

4. Are they IN their room?

(room – object of IN; thus in = preposition)
