Cytoplasm

CYTOPLASM

Nature and occurrence:

  • It is the jelly-like substance present between the cell membrane and the nucleus.
  • It consists of an aqueous substance called as cytosol.

  • It is composed of 90% water and remaining are biomolecules like carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, insoluble waste etc.
  • These molecules are made up of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen which are having a definite arrangement in its structure and more or less a fixed ratio.
  • Some elements are found in traces and they all are essential for life.

  • Various other components, or organelles, of cells are present in the cytoplasm.
  • Entire content of a living cell is known as protoplasm.
  • It includes the cytoplasm and the nucleoplasm.
  • Protoplasm is called the living substance of the cell.

Functions:

  • Cytoplasm acts as a storage site for biochemicals like amino acids, glucose, vitamins minerals etc.
  • It is site for certain metabolic reactions.
  • It provides the path for the movement of molecules to their target site from their synthesis site.
  • It contains microtubules and microfilaments that forms the cytoskeleton and provides structural strength to the cell.
