What is an Adjective?

Adjective is a word that tells us about or add to the meaning of a noun, e.g.

(i)      She is a kind lady.

(ii)     I like this pen.

(iii)    Anu lives in a large house.

(iv)    Ravi is a strong player.

The main kinds are:

     (a) Demonstrative: this, that, these, those

     (b) Distributive: each, every, either, neither

Distinction between Adjectives and Pronouns

(a)     Demonstrative Adjectives and Demonstrative Pronouns-

(i)      Please get me that book. (Adjective)

(ii)     That is my book. (Pronoun)

(b)     Possessive Adjectives and Possessive Pronouns-

(i)     This is my pen. (Adjective)  

(ii)     This pen is mine. (Pronoun)

(iii)    It is her pencil box. (Adjective)

(iv)    This pencil box is hers. (Pronoun)

(c)     Distributive Adjectives and Distributive Pronouns-

Position of adjectives: attributive and predicative use

Demonstrative, distributive, quantitative, interrogative and  possessive adjectives come before their nouns:

this book    which boy     my dog

Adjectives in this position are called attributive adjectives. 

Adjectives of quality, however, can come either before their nouns.

a rich man,    a happy girl

Adjectives in this position are called predicative adjectives.
