Types of adverbs:

Adverbs of manner: (exceptions)

Adverbs of Manner NOT ending in ‘ly’

  1. The train runs fast. (verb = runs; Question – runs how?)

(Answer – FAST. Thus, fast = adverb of manner)

 

  1. Ma’am teaches well. (verb = teaches; Question – teaches how)

(Answer – WELL. Thus, well = adverb of manner)

 

  1. Sheila studies hard. (verb = studies; Question – studies  how?)

(Answer – HARD. Thus, hard = adverb of manner)

 

Adverbs of place:

Tell us THE PLACE WHERE the action is done.

Ask the question “WHERE?” to the verb. The answer will be the Adverb of Place.

Examples:

  1. The boy is going upstairs.

(going where? Ans: upstairs. Thus, upstairs = adverb of place)

 

  1. The flowers and butterflies are there.

(are where? Ans: there. Thus, there = adverb of place)

 

  1. The horse trotted away.

(trotted where? Ans: away. Thus, away = adverb of place)
