Verb Notes-1 [Level-3]
The present and past tenses:
See the following sentences:
What is the action done? 'COOK' As you can see in sentence 1 the verb is 'cookS' and in sentence two the verb is 'cookED.' The V and the 'ed' that are added to 'cook' tell us the tense of the verb.
We add V or 'es' to show the present (now) tense. Present tense verbs are used to show that the action is happening now.
Formation of verbs:
Adding 'S',
Play + s = plays - The boy plays.
Read + s = reads - She reads a book.
Adding 'ES'
Go + es = goes - The child goes to school.
Wash + es = washes - He washes his hair.
Adding 'IES'
Carry + ies = carries - The donkey carries load.
Cry + ies = cries - The boy cries loudly.
Nothing added:
I play. / They read. / We wash. Babies cry. / You go. / Donkey carry.
The past tense:
Mother cooked food yesterday.
Past Tense is used to show that the action has already happened.
