Verb - Tenses - Simple Present Tense:

Use of Simple Present Tense: To state permanent truths

Examples:

  1. Water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen.

 

  1. God helps those who help themselves.

 

The verbs shown in green are in the simple present tense.

 

Verb - Tenses - Simple Present Tense:

Uses of the Simple Present Tense:

To state facts:

Examples:

  1. LAN our teachers teach well.

 

  1. No one knows if God really exists.

 

Present continuous tense:

Form of the verb: is / am / are + verb (ing)

Examples:

  1. Sunita is giving a card to her mother. (Action happening right now)

 

  1. We are leaving for Mumbai next Sunday. (Decided future action)

 

 

Formation of the present participles for continuous tense:

Original verb + ing

Original verb + ing = (for) pres. cont. ten

sleep + ing = sleeping

stay + ing = staying

 

Verbs ending in 'e': (the last 'e' is dropped)

Original verb + ing = (for) pres. cont. tense

give + ing = giving

ride + ing = riding

 

Verbs that have one vowel before the final consonant:

(The final consonant is doubled, except when the word ends in 'w' and ‘y’)

 

Original verb + ing = (for) pres. cont. tense

hit + ing = hitting

begin + ing = beginning

blow + ing = blowing

play + ing = playing

 

Original verb + ing = (for) pres. cont. tense

die + ing = dying

lie + ing = lying
