Will & Shall (Verbs)
Positive → I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ we/ you/ they will go
Short forms → I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ we/ you/ they'll go
Negative → I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ we/ you/ they will not/ won't go
Questions → Will I/ you/ he/ she/ it/ we/ you/ they go?
Short answers → Yes, I will No, I won't
Sarita goes to work every day.
She is always there from 8.30 until 4.30.
It is 11 o'clock now. Sarita is at work.
At 11 o'clock yesterday, she was at work.
At 11 o'clock tomorrow, she will be at work.
We shall probably go to London next week.
Short forms of shall: I'll/We'll go. (the same as will)
I shan't. We shan't, (negative]
Shall is more formal and less common than will in modern English.
Examples:
Ravi's here. I'll get him some coffee.
The Sun’s shining. I'll go swimming.
Are you going home? I'll call a taxi for you.
Anant will probably pass the exam.
In 2020 the population of India will be 140 crore.
I think, I expect, I promise, I hope, I'm sure and similar verbs:
Examples:
I expect Aryan will pass the exam.
I promise I'll come back on time.
She's sure he'll help her.
She'll probably come later.
I don't think it will rain this afternoon.
Do you think the exam will be difficult?
I’m tried. I think I’II go to bed early tonight.
It’s nice day. I think I’II sit in the garden.
It’s raining. I don’t think I’II go out.
I’II help you. (offer)
I won't be late, (promise)
I'll tell boss. (threat)
We also use Shall I...? to offer to do something:
Examples:
You look tired. Shall I help you?
That's a heavy bag. Shall I carry it for you?
It’s very warm in this room. Shall I open the window?
‘Shall I phone you this evening?’ ‘ yes, please,’
I’m going to a party tonight. What shall I wear?
It’s a nice day. Shall we go for a walk?
Where shall we go for our holidays this year?
‘let’s go out this evening.’ ‘ok, what time shall we meet?’
It's cold. Please will you switch on the heating?
Please will you lend me some money?
Shall we go to the cinema?
Shall we buy a new house ?
We do not use will for things we have arranged or decided to do.
Examples:
We're going to the cinema on Saturday, (not 'We will go')
I'm not working tomorrow (not 'I won't work')
Are you going to do the exam? (not 'Will you do')
I’m working tomorrow. (not ‘I’II work’)
There’s good film on TV tonight. I’m going to watch it. (not ‘I’II watch)
What are you doing at the weekend? (not ‘what will you do’)
Examples :
Anu travels a lot. Today she is in Mumbai. Tomorrow she'll be in Chandigarh. Next week she'll be in Jaipur.
You can phone me this evening. I'll be at home.
Leave the old bread in the garden. The birds will eat it.
We'll probably go out this evening.
Will you be at home this evening?
I won't be here tomorrow. (I will not be here)
Don't drink coffee before you go to bed. You won't sleep.
Anu is travelling in Europe. Complete the sentences with she was, she’s or she’ll be.
Example:
Yesterday she was in Paris.
