  1. transparent × opaque

transparent – (of glass, plastic, etc.) allowing you to see through it

example – Diamond is an example of a transparent stone.

opaque – not clear enough to see through or allow light through

example – The tabletop was covered with an opaque sheet.

 

  1. voluntary × compulsory     

voluntary – done willingly, not because you are forced

example – He’s a voluntary worker at the hospital.

compulsory – that must be done because of a law or a rule

example – Learning Gujarati is compulsory at our school.

 

  1. knowledge × ignorance

knowledge – the information, understanding and skills that you gain through education or         experience

example – His knowledge in Mathematics is very remarkable.

ignorance – a lack of knowledge or information about something

example – This mistake was caused by my ignorance.

 

  1. majority × minority

majority – the largest part of a group of people or things

example – The majority was in favour of banning smoking.

minority – the smaller part of a group

example – Only a minority of students are interested to participate in the debate competition.

 

  1. advance × retreat

advance – the forward movement of a group of people, especially armed forces

example – The army advanced towards the city.

retreat – to move away from a place or an enemy because you are in danger or because you have been defeat

example – The soldiers retreated as the enemy surrendered.

 

  1. tardy × early

tardy – slow to act, move or happen; late in happening or arriving

example – Atul is tardy in paying his bills.

early – near the beginning of the period of time, an event etc.

example – The train arrived 20 minutes early.

 

  1. fiction × fact

fiction – a type of literature that describes imaginary people and events

example – My friend writes fiction.

fact – something that you know is true or that has happened

example – The fact remains that we are still five players short.

  1. harsh × mild

harsh – cruel, severe and unkind

example – In PTM the Principal received some harsh criticism.

mild – not severe or unkind

example – I’ve got a mild cold.

 

  1. export × import

export – to sell and send goods to another country

example – Maximum of the engines are exported to Europe.

import – a product or service that is brought into one country from another

example – They import cars from other countries.

 

  1. illegal × lawful

illegal – not allowed by the law

example – It’s illegal to steal things.

lawful – allowed or recognized by law

example – Drinking alcohol is lawful in America.

 

  1. include × exclude

include – to make somebody or something part of something

example – Her duties include washing utensils and cleaning the house.

exclude – to deliberately not include something in what you are doing or considering

example – I’m trying to exclude fat from my diet.

 

  1. merciful × cruel

merciful – ready to forgive people and show them kindness

example – We asked him to be merciful to the animals.

cruel – having a desire to cause pain and suffering

example – I can’t stand people who are cruel to children.

 

  1. exterior × interior

exterior – the outside of something, especially a building

example – The exterior of our building needs painting.

interior – the inside part of something

example – I like the interior of my friends car.

 

  1. appear × disappear

appear – to start to be seen

example – A truck appeared around the corner.

disappear – to become impossible to see

example – Children watched until the plane disappeared from view.

 

  1. genuine × fake

genuine – exactly what it appears to be; not artificial

example – She seems sick but I’m not sure if it’s genuine.

fake – appearing to be something it is not

example – I have a jacket in fake fur.
