  1. admit × deny

admit – to agree, often unwillingly, that something is true

example – She refused to admit her guilt.

deny – to say that something is not true

example – Atul denied all knowledge of the accident.

 

  1. reluctant × enthusiastic

reluctant – hesitating before doing something

example – The employee was reluctant to admit he was wrong.

enthusiastic – feeling or showing a lot of excitement and interest about somebody or something

example – My brother was very enthusiastic about going to London.

 

  1. generous × stingy

generous – giving or willing to give freely

example – It was very generous of you to pay for the tickets.

stingy – not given or giving willingly

example – She’s always been stingy with money.

 

  1. approached × receded

approached – to come near to somebody or something in distance or time

example – Anamika approached the bank for a loan.

receded – to move gradually away from somebody or away from a previous position

example – The sound of the train receded into the distance.

 

  1. advance × retreat

advance – the forward movement of a group of people, especially armed forces

example – The Indian troops were given the order to advance.

retreat – to move away from a place or an enemy because you are in danger or because you have been defeated

example – Pakistan’s army was forced to retreat after suffering heavy losses.

 

  1. bless × curse

bless – to ask God to protect somebody or something

example – The priest blessed my new car.

curse – a rude or offensive word or phrase that some people use when they are very angry

example – Suhavi cursed the person who had stolen her money.

 

  1. cellar × attic

cellar – an underground room often used for storing things

example – Our old furniture is stored in the cellar.

attic – a room or space just below the roof of a house, often used for storing things

example – I have kept my old books in the attic.

 

  1. courteous × rude

courteous – polite, especially in a way that shows respect

example – The air hostesses are friendly and courteous.

rude – having or showing a lack of respect for other people and their feelings

example – Karan was very rude to his friends.

 

  1. dismal × cheerful

dismal – causing or showing sadness

example – Diwali will be dismal without the family.

cheerful – happy, and showing it by the way that you behave

example – Pooja is a cheerful, hard-working lady.

 

  1. ebb × flow

ebb – the period of time when the sea flows away from the land

example – The tide tends to ebb and flow.

flow – the period of time when the sea comes in towards the land.

example – The river flows through the town.

 

  1. frank × secretive

frank – honest and direct in what you say, sometimes in a way that other people might not like

example – My mom and I have always been frank with each other.

secretive – tending or liking to hide your thoughts, feelings, ideas, etc. from other people

example – Shaunak is very secretive about his work.

 

  1. miser × spendthrift

miser – a person who loves money and hates spending it

example – That miser would not give any money to the poor people.

spendthrift – a person who spends too much money or who wastes money

example – My grandmother was a spendthrift who could not budget her money.

 

  1. optimist × pessimist

optimist – a person who always expects good things to happen or things to be successful

example – My cousin is an incurable optimist.

pessimist – a person who always expects bad things to happen

example – Don’t be pessimist to realize that we are in trouble.

 

  1. plentiful × scarce

plentiful – available or existing in large amounts or numbers

example – There was a plentiful supply of food.

scarce – if something is scarce, there is not enough of it and it is only available in small quantities

example – Jobs are scarce in this region.

 

  1. prudent × imprudent

prudent – sensible and careful when you make judgments and decisions

example – It might be more prudent to get a second opinion before taking any decision.

imprudent – not wise or sensible

example – It would be imprudent to invest money in this company.
