  1. extinguish × ignite

extinguish – to make a fire stop burning or a light stop shinning

example – The firefighters tried hard to extinguish the house on fire but could not save two lives.

ignite – to start to burn

example – Petrol ignites very easily.

 

  1. stiff × limp

stiff – firm and difficult to bend or move

example – The doors were stiff and Suhavi couldn’t open them easily.

limp – not stiff or firm

example – This coat has become limp and shapeless with time.

 

  1. fertile × barren

fertile – (of land or soil) that plants grow well in

example – My uncle’s farmland is very fertile.

barren – (of land and soil) not good enough for plants to grow on it

example – This land has turned barren due to poor irrigation.

 

  1. ordinary × unique

ordinary – not unusual or different in any way

example – She was wearing an ordinary dress.

unique – being the only one of its kind

example – Each glass is painted by hand, and is unique.

 

  1. imaginary × real

imaginary – existing only in your mind or imagination

example – The equator is an imaginary line.

real – actually existing or happening and not imagined or pretended

example – It was not a ghost; it was a real person.

 

  1. imprison × free

imprison – to put somebody in prison or another place from which they cannot escape

example – He was imprisoned for 3 years.

free – not restricted or controlled by anyone else

example – They freed the parrots from the cages.

 

  1. fragile × unbreakable

fragile – easily broken or damaged

example – Be careful not to drop the vase, it’s very fragile.

unbreakable – impossible to break

example – I have bought an unbreakable dinner set.

 

  1. hill × valley

hill – an area of land that is higher than the land around it, but not as high as a mountain

example – I was passing through the hills and met an old sage.

valley – an area of low land between hills or mountains

example – My friend lives in a small town set in a valley.

 

  1. horizontal      x vertical

horizontal – in a flat position, parallel to the ground

example – The equator is a horizontal imaginary line.

vertical – standing or pointing straight up

example – I have a shirt with colourful vertical stripes.

 

  1. sow × reap

sow – to plant or spread seeds in or on the ground

example – I would like to sow some maize in this field.

reap – to cut and collect a crop

example – They reaped the corn.
