  • The glands that secrete hormones directly into blood stream are known as endocrine glands.  Different endocrine glands together constitute the endocrine system.

Development of bones and muscles.

Regulation of the secretion of hormones from endocrine gland, like adrenal, thyroid, testes and ovary

Thyroid

Thyroxin

Regulation of metabolism of carbohydrate, fat, and protein.

Inability of the body to produce this hormone may result in a disease called goitre, which causes swelling of the neck.

Adrenal

Adrenalin and Corticoids

Regulation of blood pressure, heart rate, carbohydrate metabolism and mineral balance.

It helps in the defence of the body in emergency situations.

Pancreas

Insulin

 

Lowering of blood glucose.

Inability of the body to produce insulin in sufficient quantity may esult in a disease called diabetes.

Testes

Testosterone

Regulation of male accessory sex organs and secondary sexual characters.

Ovary

Estrogen and Progesterone

Regulation of female accessory sex organs and secondary sexual characters like mammary gland, hair pattern and voice. Maintenance of pregnancy.
