Uses of old – elder – eldest and old – older – oldest

Elder and eldest are  used with same family members and we do not use than when we use the comparative degree ‘elder.

Example:

  1. Mona’s elder sister plays the guitar. (no than)

  1. Their eldest brother is a good hockey player.

To discuss the age of the siblings older and oldest will be used

Example:

Mona’s brother is older than her.

(showing age; so, than is used)

Oldest × youngest (for people)

Oldest × newest (for things)

Thus it can be used for both people and things.

Example:

  1. Sachin is one of the oldest members of the Indian team. (person)

  1. Taj Mahal is one of the oldest monuments in India. (thing)
