Exceptions and irregular adjectives
Adjective ending in ‘y’ with vowel before the last ‘y’: Just add ‘er’ and ‘est’.

Uses of old – elder – eldest and old – older – oldest
Elder and eldest are used with same family members and we do not use than when we use the comparative degree ‘elder.
Example:
To discuss the age of the siblings older and oldest will be used
Example:
Mona’s brother is older than her.
(showing age; so, than is used)
Oldest × youngest (for people)
Oldest × newest (for things)
Thus it can be used for both people and things.
