Something to remember:

 

Comparing two qualities in the same person:

  1. (Ramesh’s) Bravery > (Ramesh’s) industriousness

Ramesh is more brave than industrious.

 

  1. Ramesh’s bravery > Sachin’s bravery

Ramesh is braver than Sachin.

 

Changing the degree

Rule 1:

 Meaning of original sentence should not change.

Rule 2:

Comparison between 2 objects – only positive and comparative degrees.

Rule 3:

Comparison between 3 or more objects – all three degrees possible.

 

  1. Akbar was the greatest king.

(comparison between all kings)

(All three degrees possible. Therefore, two changes)

Changes:

A. Akbar was greater than all other kings.

(comparative degree)

B. No other king was as great as Akbar.

(positive degree)

 

  1. The pen is mightier than the sword.

(comparison between 2 objects)

(Only two degrees possible. Therefore, only one change)

Change:

A. The sword is not so mighty as the pen. (positive)

 

  1. The lion is more ferocious than most other animals.

(comparison between all animals)

(All three degrees possible. Therefore, two changes)

Changes:

A.  Most of the other animals are not as ferocious asthe lion. (positive)

B.  The lion is one of the most ferocious animals. (superlative)
