There is/There are

 

We use there is.../there are... to indicate or describe:

 

For example:

  1. There is a toy shop near my house.

  1. There is a swimming pool in our society.

  1. There are four members in my family.

  1. There is a repeat telecast of Football match on television tonight.

  1. There are one thousand meters in one kilometer.

 

We use there is with a singular noun or with an uncountable noun:   

 

For example:

  1. There is a post office near my house.

  1. There is a gold coin in the pot.

  1. There is some tea in the teapot.

 

The short form:

There is - there's

 

For example:

  1. There's a flower shop in the next street.

  1. The negative form:

 

There is not.../ There are not...

 

We use the short forms when we are speaking:

For example:

  1. There isn't any sugar in the tea.

  1. There aren't any vegetables in the refrigerator today.

Questions:

For example:

  1. Is there a pizza parlor in this area?

  1. Are there any apples on the tree?

Short answers:

For example:

  1. Is there a computer in the house?  

Yes, there is./ No, there isn't.

 

  1. Are there any kids in the park?   

 

Yes, there are./ No, there aren't.
