Homophones Study Notes-1

 

Definition : Words having the same sound but different meanings and spellings are called Homophones.

Example:

  1. son – someone’s male child

Example – I have two children. My son’s name is Amit & daughter’s name is Ravina.

sun – the star around which the Earth moves. It provides light and heat to the Earth

Example – The sun gives us heat and light. The sun is a big ball of fire

 

  1. hair – fine thread-like strands growing from the skin of any living being

Example – Khushi has got long hair. She coloured her hair brown.

hare – a rabbit – like animal

Example – The hare runs very fast.

 

  1. meet – to see and talk to someone for the first time

Example – I was very happy to meet my old friends.

meat – the parts of an animal’s body used as food

Example – I prefer eating vegetables rather than meat.

 

  1. pair – a set of two things used together or regarded as a unit

Example – She bought a new pair of trousers.

pear – a sweet juicy yellow or green fruit

ExamplePear is a juicy fruit. I enjoy eating pears.

 

  1. blew – past tense of ‘blow’ which means when the wind blows something, it moves it.

Example – The leaves blew in the breeze.

blue – the colour of the sky

ExampleBlue is my favourite colour so my mom gifted me a blue coloured frock on my birthday.

 

  1. flower – the part of a plant that holds the seeds and that is usually pretty and brightly coloured

Example – Rose is my favourite flower.

flour – powder made from wheat, used for making bread, cakes, etc.

Example – I bought 10 kg wheat flour from the market.

 

  1. one – the number 1, single

Example – I had two books. One book I gifted to my friend.

won – past tense of ‘win’ which means to be best or first in a competition

Example – We won the cricket match.

 

  1. sea – A large body of salty water that covers a large part of the Earth’s surface

Example – The sea looks very beautiful in summer so we decided to sail across the sea in a ship in our vacations.

see – to watch something

Example – We can see the river from our house.

 

  1. dear – regarded with deep affection

Example – Payal is a very dear friend of mine.

deer – quite large animal with four legs which eats grass and leaves

Example – I saw a deer in the zoo.

 

  1. their – belonging to or associated with the people or things,

Example – I have many friends, I like to play with their toys.

there – in, at, or to that place or position

Example – We have a circus in our city, I am going there tomorrow.
