Homophones Study Notes-5

 

  1. bread – A type of food made from flour, water and usually yeast mixed

together and baked.

example – I ate a slice of bread in my breakfast.

bred – past tense of ‘breed’ which means to keep animals for the purpose of producing young animals in a controlled way

example – The rabbits are bred for their long coat .

 

  1. heard – to receive or become conscious of a sound using your ears

example – I heard a noise upstairs.

herd – a large group of animals of the same type that live and feed together

example – He owns a large herd of cattle.

 

  1. him –refer to a male person or animal previously mentioned or easily identified

example – Monu was crying so I gave him some of my toys.

hymn – a religious song or poem of praise to God

example – The choir sang a lovely hymn.

 

  1. higher – the more advanced of the two main levels

example – I am going to Oxford for my higher education.

hire – to pay to use something for a short period

example – We are planning to hire a car for four days.

 

  1. which – what one or ones

example Which book do you want?

witch – a woman who is believed to have magical powers, especially to do evil things.

example – It is believed that a witch makes her broom with ashes.

 

  1. road – a long hard surface, built for vehicles to travel along

example – There is heavy traffic on the road so we should cross the road carefully.

rode – past tense of ‘ride’ which means to sit on any vehicle and travel along on it, controlling its movements

example – Aashi rode the bus to school every day.

 

  1. read – to look at words or symbols and understand what they mean

example –I like to read good books.

reed – types of grasses growing together in groups near water

example – The edge of the pond was fringed with reeds.

 

  1. war – armed fighting between two or more countries or groups

example – It was the year, India declared war on Pakistan.

wore – past tense of ‘wear’ which means to have clothing, jewellery, etc. on your body

example – I wore a black dress in New Year’s party.

 

  1. pail – bucket

example – I want a pail of water for bathing.

pale – not bright

example – She is having a pale complexion.

 

  1. steal – to take something without the permission or knowledge of the owner and keep it

example – Thieves used to steal jewellery from the big showrooms in that area.

steel – a strong metal which is a mixture of iron and carbon.

example – I always use utensils made of stainless steel in my kitchen.
