  1. ascent – when someone or something climbs or moves upwards

example – The mountain climber faced a steep ascent to the summit.

The airplane’s ascent to the sky was magnificent.

assent – official agreement to or approval of an idea, plan or request

example – My seniors gave their assent to my ideas.

 

  1. aid – help or support

example – The President is sending aid to the area after the earthquake.

aide – a person whose job is to help someone important, such as a

member of a government example – Prime Minister of India requested aide from American Government.

 

  1. pearl – a small round white object, found in the shell of a sea creature and used to make expensive jewellery.

example – I have a very beautiful pearl necklace.

purl – a knitting stitch

example – I have almost completed my sweater, just a purl stitch is required.

 

  1. liar – someone who tells lies

example – She is a great liar. No one can trust her.

lyre – musical instrument

example – My grandmother has a lyre in her room. She plays it very well.

 

  1. fate – the development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as predetermined by a supernatural power

example – I believe fate brought us together.

fete – events to raise funds for charity

example – I am planning to arrange a fete for cancer patients.

 

  1. lain – past participle of ‘lie’ which means to put someone on the surface.

example – We have lain on every mattress in the store, and now we must decide which one is good for us.

lane – a narrow road

example – We walked down the lane for morning walk.

 

  1. summery – suitable for summer

example – I need to buy some summery clothes.

summary – a short clear description or ideas about something

example – Today our class teacher gave us the summary of all the

important chapters.

 

  1. descent – relation to a particular person or group of people who lived in the past

example – Ravi traces his line of descent from the king of Udaipur.

dissent – strong difference of opinion on a particular subject

example – The Principal expressed his dissent from that of the majority.

 

  1. gilt – covered with a thin layer of gold or a substance which is intended to look like it

example – I gifted a gilt picture frame to my brother on his birthday.

guilt – a feeling of worry or unhappiness because you have done

something wrong

example – She doesn’t seem to have any sense of guilt.

 

  1. gild – to make something look bright, as if covered with gold

example – The golden light gilded the sea.

guild – an organization of people who do the same job or have the same interests

example – The fashion designers’ guild is very creative but sometimes a bit fussy.

 

  1. affect – to produce a change in somebody or something

example – The disease can affect his breathing.

effect – result or consequence

example – Eating too many sweets can have a bad effect on your teeth.

 

  1. accept – to take willingly something that is offered

example – He would not accept any money from us.

except – not including a particular thing, person, or fact

example – I’ve washed all the clothes except your shirt.

 

  1. advice – a suggestion about what somebody should do in a particular situation

example – She gave me some good advice.

advise – to tell someone what you think they should do in a particular situation

example – Doctor advised her to take rest till she gets well.

 

  1. Capital – A town or city that is head of government

example – Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

capitol – A building where the government meets

example – The United States Capitol is a very famous man – made landmark in America.

 

  1. allusion – an indirect reference

example – She made allusion to her first marriage.

illusion – false appearance

example – Arman could no longer distinguish between illusion and reality.

 

  1. crews – people who work on a ship or plane

example – On a ship, there are crews to clean up the decks.

cruise – ride on a boat

example – I would love to be on cruise for once at least.
