Role of hormones in completing the life history of insects and frogs

ROLE OF HORMONES IN COMPLETING THE LIFE HISTORY OF INSECTS AND FROGS

  • Hormones are required not only for human beings but are essential for life cycle of other organisms also.
  • Different organisms go through different stages of growth starting from the egg to the adult stage.
  • Example: Frogs go through three distinct stages, i.e., egg, tadpole (larva) and adult.
  • This transformation of the larva into an adult through sequential changes is called metamorphosis.
  • Metamorphosis in insects is controlled by insect hormones.
  • In a frog, it is controlled by thyroxine, the hormone produced by thyroid.
  • Thyroxine production requires the presence of iodine in water.
