Exercise – 2
 

In each pair of situations, make one sentence with a Present Perfect Simple verb for the longer time period. For the shorter time period, make another sentence with a Present Perfect Continuous verb.

Example:

a. I started work at 9 a.m. and I'm still working.

b. I started to work in this office in 1989 and I still work here.

Answer:

a. I've been working, since 9 a.m.

b. I’ve worked in this office since 1989.

 
  1. a. I watched TV on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, etc.
b. I began to watch TV three hours ago and I'm still watching.
 
  1. a. They began the marathon five hours ago and they're still running.
b. I ran from London to Brighton in 1994, 1997 and 1998.
 
  1. a. She began to listen to music at 11 p.m. and she's still listening.
b. I listened to Beatles records when I was a child. I still listen to them.
 
  1. a. She slept in this bed when she was a child. She still sleeps in it.
b. She went to bed twelve hours ago and she's still sleeping.
 
  1. a. We moved to Cambridge in 1975 and we still live here.
b. They came to Oxford one month ago. They're living in a caravan.
 
Answers:
  1. a. I’ve watched tv every day this week.
b. I’ve been watching tv for 3 hours
 
  1. a. They’ve been running in the marathon for 5 hours.
b. I’ve run from London to Brighton three times in my life.
 
  1. a. Shes been listening to music since 11 pm.
b. I’ve heard the Beatles record all my life.
 
  1. a. Shes slept in that bed all her life.
b. Shes been sleeping for 12 hours
 
  1. a. We’ve lived in Cambridge since 1975.
b. They’ve been living in a caravan for a month.
