Centrosome

CENTROSOME

Nature and occurrence:

  • They are found only in animal cells.
  • It is located above nucleus and is a membrane less organelle.
  • It is made up of hollow of two granular structures called centrioles.
  • These centrioles are made up of hollow and cylindrical structures called microtubules.
  • In plant cells, centrosome is replaced by a structure called polar caps.

Function:

  • They help in cell division by forming spindles in animal cells. During cell division centrioles migrates towards the poles of animal cells and are involved in the spindle formation.
  • In plant cells same function is performed by polar caps.
