We often use words beginning some-, any- and no-:


For things

 
 

For people

 
 

For places

Something-a thing but we don’t know what.

 
 
somebody or someone-for persons but we don’t know who.

 
 
somewhere –in/to a place but we don’t know where.

anything

 
 
anybody or anyone

 
 
anywhere
nothing

 
 
nobody or no one
 
 
nowhere

 

We use the no-words with a positive verb to express negative ideas.

We can use else after someone, anything etc.

 

Examples:

  1. Jaya was in the park but I saw no one else. (= I saw only Jaya)

  2. Would you like anything else? (= something more)

  3. The hotel was closed, so we stayed somewhere else. (= at a different place)

 

Practice :

  1. We need some bananas.

  2. Is there anything wrong with her ?

  3. There is nothing wrong with her.

  4. I think, there is something wrong with her.

  5. There is somebody (or someone) in the garden,

  6. Is there anybody (or anyone) in the garden?

  7. There isn't anybody (or anyone) in the garden.

  8. There is nobody (or no-one) in the garden.
