Step farming

STEP FARMING

1. In the hilly areas, people grow crops by cutting steps in the mountains.

       This process of farming is known as step farming.

2. In this process, a series of steps are cut on the hillside.
3. Crops  are sown on the steps and a stone wall is built to protect the sides of each step.
4. These fields are effective for growing crops requiring large amount of water, such as rice.

Advantages:

1. Different types of crops can be grown in different steps.
2. Speed of the water flow decreases due to the steps thus providing ample amount of water to the crops.
